Latino Initiative for Empowerment

Our Job Connections Community Career Center in Lyons is home to Goodwill’s Buena Vida outreach initiative which connects businesses and job seekers in Toombs and surrounding counties.  The Center offers job seekers access to job leads and technology to prepare for and conduct an effective job search. Job seekers can enroll in classes to refine their language skills, write resumes, learn interviewing skills and develop an effective job search strategy. Businesses will be able to list their job openings and utilize the facility to conduct job interviews. Through partnerships with other community agencies, the community center will offer a variety of adult education classes including financial literacy classes, health and wellness classes, and GED preparatory classes.

Career Services

  • Learn how to prepare an effective resume and develop interviewing and networking skills
  • Use computers and job boards to search for jobs
  • Use FAX and copy machines for applications, resumes, etc.
    Learn how to prepare an effective cover letter to go with your resume
  • Use phones to call employers
  • Utilize staff to assist with job searches and obtain job leads
  • Attend a career services workshop
  • Prepare for the certified Georgia Work Ready Assessment

Financial Services for Clients

  • Create a budget and spending plan
  • Pull your credit report, read it and determine ways to improve your score
  • Sign up for a financial services class
  • Learn how to buy a home or a car
  • Apply for student loads and learn how to pay for college
  • Find out how to open and manage a bank account
  • Have your taxes prepared at no cost and learn about tax credits you may be eligible for

We have also started recruiting volunteers to be train as Tax Advisors under the VITA Program offered by the IRS. This is been headed up by our New Career Center Manager, Michael Whitfield (912) 663-3223.
